The countdown is on!! 5 days and a wake-up... we'll be on our way to Ireland via Newark's Liberty International Airport on Continental Airlines direct to Shannon International Airport near Limerick.
We have a full itinerary planned but, with enough flexibility to change on the fly depending on the whims of the ladies I'll be accompanying - my wife, Rosie, and mother-in-law, Rose. I'm quite excited about the trip for many reasons, none the least of which is the fact that I've never been to Ireland before!
The reader's digest itinerary:
- Shannon to Cork and Blarney Castle;
- Waterford for a couple of days to visit family and celebrate Rose's 78th birthday;
- Wicklow County and Enniskerry where we'll be staying near the PowersCourt estate;
- On to Galway where we'll stay in a hotel right across from where Rosie's mom grew up;
- The village of Cong, where John Wayne filmed Quiet Man, continuing on to Achill Island to visit some of Rose's childhood friends;
- Omey Island where the Mongan family roots are... you can only reach the island at low tide;
- Back to Galway for another day and to visit more of Rose's friends and family;
- On our next to last day in country, heading down to the Cliffs of Mohr and then on the way back to Shannon Airport via Ennis.
So much to do/see, so little time! Can't wait. Plenty to do between today and this coming Thursday, 10/6, when we take the 'red-eye' to Shannon. Rosie's off to pick up her mom tomorrow, Sunday, 10/2, and bring her back here to Long Valley.
